i don't sleep, i drink coffee instead . . .

los gran torinos at the yukon bar in seward, ak
st. patricks day 2005

so, out here in the bay, the fourth is a day generally despised by yours truly(it's no holiday for me, so suck it all you white collared lower 48ers). i've never been one to waste a bunch of cash on fireworks and don't really see the excitement--well, shooting bottle rockets and roman candles at cars as a kid was always fun. i especially can't relate to the drunk fishermen that do away with shimmering wows of ariel rocket flowering-type displays for the caveman kaboom of a seal bomb, 1/4 stick of dynamite or, in this year's case, a homemade powder keg bomb. it's just loud and obnoxious. ugh. me like firebox go big boom! doesn't help that the half-wits lit the black powder as i was trying to get a couple of hours of sleep in. the ground trembled, windows rattled, things fell of the wall. america-fuck yeah!

yesterday, wild salmon proponent and best selling author, Andrew Weil was visiting with my boss and came through for a little tour of our operation. he wore one of those cheesy alaska wildlife t-shirts, had a good handshake and introduced himself as Andy. first time i've met someone with a mushroom (psilocybe weilii) named after them.

dana sent me a link to this frightening website belonging to the "world's most photographed squirrel" and it's caretaker(?) the quite possibly taxidermied Kelly Foxton. scary shit. one has to wonder how much time is put into the sets and costumes for sugarbush's photo shoots. that and what kind of tranquilizers the two of them are on . . .

the torinos (above is a photo from our first show) have been invited to play some shows in talkeetna and fairbanks by our friends in stubby's crack co. i think eu vusahm may be in tow as well. look for dates soon . . .

in hopeless effort to drown out the chaos outside my door, i'm digging on Ethiopiques Vol. 1: golden years of modern Ethiopian music (1969-1975). particularly, the instrumental track (#15)Heywete. dope.

from the looks of it, los gran torinos conjure up unusual light phenomona (ball lightning?), old lamp shades, and shakey cameras. when do i get to hear it jl?
