the people all call her alaska

This is a sad and somewhat strange story. This one is just plain sad.

UAA's Loussac library has been culling the stacks lately and selling unwanted books for 50 cents. Mostly it's a bunch of garbage but in the last 2 weeks I've picked up a '55 edition of this Mencken book and a collection called "The Age of Rock: Sounds of the American Cultural Revolution." Among the expected pieces on the Stones, the Beatles, Dylan and (gag) Morrison, there is a Robert Christgau piece on poetaster rock stars, a good Zappa interview with Frank Kofsky, photos I've never seen of the Fugs, Incredible String Band, Rob Tyner, and two great Doon Arbus pieces: "James Brown Is Out Of Sight" and "In Person: The Mothers Of Invention"--the latter of which had me going back to this BBC video of "King Kong" to see how spot on Arbus' descriptions of some of these cats really are.

Bedazzled has some MC5 footage from a '67 television performance: Black to Comm. Hell yeah! (via Screenhead)
